About Us

The University of Cincinnati Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience is committed to excellence in education, research and clinical care. With a dedicated staff and excellent faculty, it seeks to provide the best mental health treatment while conducting cutting-edge research and providing education and training for future clinicians and researchers.

The department operates many research programs in basic and clinical neuroscience, with extensive support from the National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies including private foundations, industry and contributions from private individuals. Within the department, centers of excellence exist for research and treatment in addictive disorders and mood disorders.

Programs focusing on basic mechanisms of eating behavior and metabolism are also among the nation’s elite. We are actively studying new treatments for a variety of illnesses and, through clinical trials and research studies, offer many opportunities to the public for participation.

In the field of education, the department has an outstanding residency program that offers a diverse training experience for new clinicians. Also, in conjunction with departments throughout UC, we train graduate students in the neurosciences.

Finally, our clinical programs offer the highest standard of care for the Cincinnati region and beyond. UC Health Psychiatry is nationally recognized as a leader in advancing the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral disorders. Recognized by Best Doctors in America and Top Doctors in Cincinnati, our expert clinicians are committed to using cutting-edge scientific advancements to provide the best mental-health treatment available to our patients.

Faculty members staff University Hospital’s Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) and inpatient units to provide acute and emergent mental health care for people throughout the Tristate area. We are in the process of relocating University Hospital’s psychiatric services to leased space in Deaconess Hospital, allowing for expansion of care in an updated setting. Outpatient care is offered at the Stetson Building near University Hospital, with particular expertise in management  of mood and anxiety disorders, cognitive-behavioral therapy and other sophisticated psychotherapies.

The department provides forensic services to the courts and attorneys, and risk assessments to businesses to help manage impaired employees. We also provide addiction services that include methadone substitution for heroin addiction at our Crossroads facility. Central Clinic sites provide psychiatric care for the under-insured.

Our faculty members staff the Lindner Center of HOPE, a free-standing mental health Center in Mason, Ohio, which has recently formed a partnership with UC Health to integrate clinical, research and educational missions.
