Medical Student Education - Year 4 Electives
Addiction Psychiatry
The elective focuses on interviewing, diagnosis and management of alcohol, opioid and other substance dependence disorders. It includes rehabilitation and outpatient counseling.
Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry
The Adolescent Psychiatric Service at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center allows the student to participate in the care of adolescents who have mood and anxiety disorders, behavioral disturbances, psychosis, learning disabilities, abuse histories and family problems. The student works with an interdisciplinary team, which makes individual and family diagnostic assessments and treatment decisions.
Child Psychiatry Acting Internship
The student participates in the care of children with psychiatric disorders such as attention deficit disorder, bipolar disorder and sexual abuse. There is flexibility about areas of study and clinical responsibility at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Child Psychiatry Consultation/Liaison Service
The elective focuses on the evaluation of children and adolescents. The major sites for evaluating children are inpatient medical wards at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Community Psychiatry
In this outpatient clinical experience, students work with patients with chronic mental illness. Students also have the opportunity to do home visits with the clinic staff. (Not offered during the 2011-2012 academic year)
Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry
Students perform psychiatric consultations on medical and surgical inpatients at UC Health University Hospital.
Emergency Psychiatry
Students participate in the management of patients who present to the Psychiatric Emergency Service at UC Health University Hospital. Our Psychiatry Emergency Service serves approximately 10,000 patients per year.
Forensic Psychiatry
Students participate in supervised clinical experiences in forensic psychiatry at Summit Behavioral Health Care, a state forensic hospital.
Inpatient Psychiatry Acting Internship
Students assist in the treatment of psychiatric inpatients at UC Health University Hospital at the level of an acting intern. Students see a broad spectrum of disorders including psychosis, mood disorders, substance use disorders and personality disorders.
Primary Care Psychiatry
Students participate in supervised clinical experiences in delivery of psychiatric care in primary care settings, and primary care in psychiatric settings.
