Smoking Cessation Clinical Trials

Smoking Cessation in Recovering, Alcohol Dependent Men

We are currently enrolling for a study entitled, "Topiramate to Aid Smoking Cessation in Recovering, Alcohol Dependent Men."  This study is a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to test the efficacy of topiramate versus placebo as an aid to smoking cessation for men who are in alcohol dependence recovery.

Another aim of the study is to explore whether or not topiramate reduces relapse to alcohol use in individuals who are dependent on both alcohol and nicotine.  All participants will receive standardized smoking cessation counseling in combination with the medication (or placebo).  Following completion of the treatment phase of the study, participants will enter a 24-week follow-up period during which the longer-term outcome of the intervention will be assessed.

Volunteers for this study must be male and between the ages of 18 and 65 who are generally healthy and are motivated to quit smoking.

More information about this study can be found at www.clinicaltrials.gov (ID# NCT 00802412) and interested parties should contact Tri-TARC at 513-475-OHIO (513-475-6446) or e-mail Becky at Rebecca.Kramer@va.gov

Smoking Cessation and Bipolar Disorder

We are currently enrolling for "Targeted Intervention for Bipolar Smokers."  This study is a 12-week pilot trial to develop and test a targeted counseling approach for cigarette smokers with bipolar disorder.

All participants will receive open-label transdermal nicotine replacement therapy and one of two types of counseling.  Volunteers for this study must be over 18 years of age, motivated to quit smoking, and meet criteria for bipolar disorder.

Interested parties should contact Tri-TARC at 513-475-OHIO (513-475-6446) or e-mail Becky at Rebecca.Kramer@va.gov

Smoking Cessation and Depression

We are currently looking for adult smokers with depression to enroll in a clinical research trial.  The purpose of the trial is to evaluate the safety and efficacy in smokers with depression of a medication that is approved to help smokers quit.

Qualified participants will receive study medication or placebo (sugar pill), smoking cessation counseling, and all study-related physical exams and laboratory tests at no cost, and may be compensated for time and travel.

Interested parties should contact Tri-TARC at 513-558-7179 or 1-877-TRITARC or e-mail Stephanie at Stephanie.Nolting@uc.edu
